This weekend we spent a lot of time “fall” cleaning (does that exist?) and rearranging/redecorating our home. We wrote about/introduced our living room yesterday which was one of our projects, but we also wanted to share some kitchen updates! We love how cleaning everything from top to bottom to windows to floors and a few decor updates can make you fall totally back in love with your home : )
First things first, our kitchen table… It’s still the same table, but we found that shoving it against the railing to save space in the picture below was actually too awkward. It felt funny picking a spot to sit for dinner, and the person in the corner had a very little amount of room to work with, and if we moved the table anymore to the right, the chair would stick out into the walk way. We’re not graceful people and that would lead to many o’ trip and falls.
So, we tried it out the long way, and despite our earlier thoughts, we still have plenty of room to move around in the kitchen.
Now it feels 100x more natural to sit and eat and so far we’re loving how simple the change was, but how much more “flow” it gives the small space.
For fall, we added a simple centerpiece made with a large bowl, gourds, and a little arrangement in the middle. The ball jar was a craft store find and we simply filled it with corks (we like wine a tad so always have them on hand). Using some twine, twigs and ribbon, we made a little bow, and using a few coffee filters and a green straw we made a little flower for height. After adding a few gold & silver placemats found at a garage sale we called it a day!
Next we moved onto the countertops. I’ve been dying to put up this little kitchen tile that our 3rd sister got me in Spain so I finally decided on displaying it on a little stand right here. How cute is that?
Now let’s go back to a week ago, when I purchased the most beautiful bouquet of flowers from a local farmers market that was our last summer “hurrah” on our kitchen table. I sadly didn’t get any good pictures before they started wilting, but instead of throwing them out, remember that you can usually get one more look out of your bouquets by removing the few flowers that are still in decent shape, cutting them way down, and displaying them in a different way! I put mine in my coffee cup (also from Spain!) for their second look and added it to the countertop as well.
Last but not least, I addressed the elephant of messiness in the room- the top of our fridge. Somehow it has become a collectors shelf for anything and everything. It’s more embarrassing than the amount of things in my purse. And that’s a lot.
What do dirty gardening gloves, a broken clock, paperwork, receipts, placemats and a variety of other things have in common? Nothing. Besides the fact that none of them should be on top of my fridge. Do we see the problem? Now, here’s my favorite solution.
I love love love baskets and “catch all” pieces like this. With some quick organization, the things that are actually relevant to the kitchen were put into this basket and put back on top of the fridge.
Much improved! With a lack of cabinet space in this kitchen, I’m sure this basket will wear many hats (that doesn’t make sense either) and will help keep the room at least appear organized : ) It’s the little things.
Now, with the living room and kitchen set up and cleaned for fall, we’re moving onto our bedrooms!
