Ever since we started our latest furniture project featuring chalkboard paint (stay tuned! it rhymes with bironing hoard), we’ve been jonesing to try chalkboard paint with something else! So, with the holidays coming up, we decided to focus on a few fun ways to use it for entertaining. Here’s our first of two posts : )
First up we took a ride to purchase cheap tiles from The Home Depot to make the coasters with:
We’ve seen these done with different decorative papers and mod-podge, but wanted to try them with chalkboard paint for a different look. To make them, we simply sprayed the coasters with the chalkboard paint according to the directions on the can and let them dry. It was a lot-a-bit windy out the day we sprayed them, so we used an old box to prevent the spray paint from sticking to everything but our tiles.
To give it a little color, we took gold acrylic paint and painted the sides and the freehand design on the top. (sorry it was late when I took this!)
Then, to protect furniture from being scratched, we cut out squares from felt and used some heavy duty glue to attach the felt to the bottom of the tile. Once they were all put together, we also conditioned the chalkboard surface per the directions as well.
After that, you’re done with your coasters! Supply some chalk and invite your guests to draw away. These coasters are an easy way to keep track of your glass during the holiday entertaining season, or even as an “everyday” use in the kitchen! It’s a one-size-fit’s-all take on the traditional wine charm 🙂
These could be done in any color you wish to match your decor and used all year round!
You could add a stencil to the top or make more symmetrical shapes with painters tape or mod-podge a paper border or even add some fun washi tape. The possibilities are as endless as that run on sentence…
Stay tuned for another post with chalkboard dining soon!
Prost!

I love these… seriously such a great idea! Would make an awesome gift. Thanks so much for sharing it at the Get Your DIY On Chalkboard Challenge!! Hope you are able to make it back with a thrifty Halloween project (if you haven’t already!!). Have a fabulous week:)

Hi, I read through your post but I am wondering what you used the mod podge for? I see it in the picture. And you didn’t need an acrylic sealer over this?
Hi Danielle! The mod podge is to glue the felt onto the bottom of the tile 🙂 I didn’t seal it so that the chalkboard paint could be used as a chalkboard, but if you use standard paint it would definitely help to use a sealer! Hope that helps!
