Blue Studded DIY Magnets

Today we’re sharing a quick little project we put together using some of our favorite things- free scrap materials from around the house! After a quick trip to Target (who am I kidding- they’re never quick) I was feeling inspired by some of the fun Nate Berkus pieces using mixed metals and deep toned colors, so I went to my craft supplies and pulled out these!

Magnet Supplies

  • Some scrap wood (leftover from our mitered corners on our chicken wire message board)
  • Magnets
  • Paint
  • Thumbtacks
  • Glue (not pictured)

I started out by painting the wood using regular craft acrylic paint in a deep periwinkle blue color. It took about 3 coats to fully cover the sides, and then they were left to dry.

Next, to add the studded multi-toned-metal look, I used two different colors of thumbtacks, and pushed them into the sides. Some I was able to push in with my thumb, while others required a little hammer time action. Each side got one silver and one brass tack.

Magnet Thumbtack Studs

After they were all studded and I could no longer feel my thumb, I used hot glue to adhere the wood pieces to the little round magnets. I attached them to look more like a stud instead of on it’s side like a triangle, just to give it a little more dimension.

Another few minutes of drying, and ta-da- they were done!

A quick and easy project that will definitely get used. Between our new message board and these magnets, we’ve got all of the paper-hanging-shinanigans we will ever need.

What do you think? Do you have any fun DIY blinged out magnets in your home? Are you in love with Nate Berkus’s line and style as well?

TGIF! Have a great weekend : )

If I could have any interior designer come decorate my entire home, it would be Nate Berkus. Totally see what you mean about channeling his style in this project, especially with the geometric shape of the magnets. Very unique and beautiful color!

Yep, I’m falling back in love with Nate Berkus. Back in the Oprah days about ten years ago, we were actually on a plane with him, which was the coolest thing ever until we realized he was a wee bit cranky. It was so HUGELY disappointing. It wasn’t that long after the tsunami though, so I’m going to assume he was just going through a rough time AND having a bad day. I mean, how could you dislike someone who designs golden turtle boxes!!!

I love that you mixed the metals on these magnets!

Oh no- what a bummer! That’s still a very cool story though : ) I suppose everyone has some of those days- but totally agree with the golden turtles- I’ve always imagined him to be relaxed yet fun and quirky based on his designs!
