I am really really excited about todays post. Why? Because we’re joining the One Room Challenge put on by Calling it Home! There are 20 fabulous design bloggers that participate in the ORC (all listed here for you to follow along if you’d like!) and then there are linking participants like us that follow the same timeline and play along. Basically, you have 6 weeks to makeover a room and have to share your progress and any dilemmasย each week. Welcome to week one!ย I love that there is a deadline because that will really motivate me to get a room finished. And we have PLENTY of unfinished/untouched rooms in our house right now… as in I won’t even list them because it will bring on stress hiccups. Ain’t no body likes those.
After debating which of those rooms would be the focus of this challenge, we decided on the main bath! It is the bathroom that we’re currently using (because our master bath doesn’t have any type of vanity or sink right now) but eventually will be the guest bath once that’s done. I put together a mood board for the room and will be working off of that, and of course improvising as I go!
Here’s a little inspiration so you can see where my brain’s headed…
And here’s some before’s (thank goodness these will now be before’s) of the room…
This is what the room looked like when we moved in, and all we’ve really done is change the shower curtain and add another hook for a towel. We’re fancy, I know.
First of all, let’s get the not as fun part out of the way… the things that have to stay. That list includes the layout of the room, the tile, the vanity, countertop, sink and mirror. It’s just not in the budget with so many other things going on right now, butย that makes the challenge even more fun! I can’t wait to upgrade our 1979 builder grade room into something much more us.
COLOR SCHEME: We’re going to go with a neutral yet slightly trendy color scheme of gray, yellow and white. I have a shower curtain that I had purchased to use as material for another project that is acting as our inspiration piece, so I’m going to run with it! All of our hardware and handles will be a stainless/satin nickel color.
VANITY: This cabinet (and hardware) is the same as in our kitchen and what used to be in our master and half bath. 1979’s best. I plan on keeping the original boxes but upgrading the doors and drawers, as well as creating some open storage like in the inspiration photo. I’m not 100% on the color the vanity will end up, but leaning towards white or a light stain right now. We’re going to give a go at concrete countertops to cover the old laminate, and will upgrade the faucet as well. I’m loving the waterfall option!
MIRROR: Oh builder grade mirror that everyone hates, you’re definitely getting a new frame. I’m thinking a mix of wood and white similar to our half bath mirror to give it a bit more dimension.
ACCESSORIES: Plenty of towel hooks, baskets, some new artwork, floating shelves that we’re going to build from scratch and a light fixture that was found while “shopping” in my parents basement will help pull the room together, as well as a few other DIY projects that are still floating around in my head. Be sure to follow along if you’d like to see what ends up happening : )
Things that remain undecided due to well, indecision, or budget at this point are a paint color, the large linen closet (keep as a bifold door or upgrade to match the vanity), window treatments (or lack there of) and any upgrades to the shower area.
The overall look we’re going for is a fresh, clean, farmhouse style that will blend in well with other plans for the house, but stand out in it’s own detailed way!
Now, I’m off to get working on this room… the clock is ticking! : )

What a lovely bathroom space this is going to be. I cannot wait to see your progress and how it all unfolds.
I too am participating in the One Room Challenge. My challenges? I just moved to a completely new state (Texas) last week and therefore have no idea where to source things other than Wal Mart and Home Depot. ๐ I am currently battling strep throat and just want to lay around and eat soup as opposed to painting a 30 year old polyurethaned oak coffered ceiling that has never before seen paint. The accompanying powder room rivals the worst gas station stall ever. But a bonus is that the previous owners installed a wine glass and bottle holder on the ceiling of the bathroom. I kid you not. Come take a peek.
Oh my goodness! I hope you start feeling better! The wine comment cracked me up… I’ll definitely have to hop over to your blog to see it! Good luck on your space! ๐
I love your inspiration picture! I can’t wait to see your progress over the next few weeks. I’m working on my master bathroom for the challenge, so it’ll be fun to follow someone else working on a bathroom!
Thank you! Ooo I’ll have to follow along with yours as well! Funny how such a small space can be such a challenge ๐
I love all your inspiration pieces – that vanity is amazing! I can not wait to watch the transformation over the next few weeks.
Thanks Melissa! Hoping that it all comes together like in my head haha ๐
