It’s officially time for the spring edition of the One Room Challenge! If you’re not familiar with the challenge, it’s a 6 week renovation story of any room of your choosing hosted by Linda at Calling it Home! Twenty fabulous design bloggers take on the challenge each week and other bloggers (us!) play along as participants. If you have some free time (the more the better in this case!) definitely hop on over to follow along with the designers and participants! I’m already so excited to see how their rooms turn out : )
This is actually our second time participating- we loved it so much last fall, that we decided to take on another space! If you’re new here, hi! I’m Jodie- welcome to Sypsie! We purchased a 1970’s builder-beauty of a home last July, and have been slowly working our way through the house, room by room. For more details, be sure to check out our home tour page, and to see last falls ORC, check out our bathroom reveal!
Now, let’s get down to the nitty gritty. The dirty deets. Here’s the before pictures of our front guest bedroom from the day that we moved in.
I wish that I could say it has gotten better since then, but all we have done is take down the old window treatments, plop in some old furniture and called it a day. But, it deserves so much more than that! It’s a large room with amazing natural light. Especially now that we have our guest bathroom looking fresh and new, the guest bedroom this round was a easyΒ choice.
Before we get to all of the plans, I’ll get the not-as-fun stuff out of the way. The carpet is staying until we save up enough to carry the hardwoods we want throughout the upstairs, and I’ve set a strict limit of $300 or less for the whole project. It’s officially a time and money challenge now!
Here’s a little mood board to show the color scheme and design that I’m thinking for this space : )
We are going for a medium/dark gray paint color, with lots of wood and neutral elements. A little pop of color with some red and patterned linens will give it a little life, and the furniture shown is just for inspiration to show how the tones will all go together. The lighting is still undecided- but something light and airy is what’s currently running through my brain : ) Of course lots of artwork will be added, as well as fun accessories.
And here’s the master to-do list!
- Paint (will be mixing to create a custom color using what we have!)
- Wood accent wall behind bed
- Build 2 nightstands
- Build a bench
- Add seating
- New light fixture
- Add area rug
- Add lamps
- DIY bedskirt
- Artwork
- Headboard?
There are a few TBD items that have not been added, but since I change my mind more than anyone M has ever met, I’m going to figure those ones out as they come : ) I already own the curtains and most of the bedding, and have a basic bed frame and old turned legs for the nightstands. Everything else will either be borrowed from other rooms, purchased, or DIYed to stay within budget!
I can’t wait to get started and share the progress along the way! Hope you join us for the ride, and feel free to subscribe to make it extra easy if you’d like : )
See you next week, same time, same place!

First, I looked at the bathroom from the last challenge you did and I LOVE it!!! It is the look I am hoping for in the bathroom I am doing for my ORC. (Only the bathroom I’m doing is super tiny). I actually think I may have put the same faucet on my mood board. I’m excited to see what you do with this room. I’m working within a tight budget too, just makes it more of a challenge. Good luck!
You are too sweet! Thank you! We really love the faucet so far- I think you will too! Excited to see how your bathroom comes together π good luck!!
I love the mix of warm tones you have with the neutrals! Changing your/our mind is part of the fun … I find that it is when I am really in the thick of things that my creativity comes out! Let it fly!
Thanks Kim! We’re excited to introduce a little pop of color π I agree! I always struggle putting together mood boards because adjusting as you go is one of my favorite parts as well!
That is a big room. Loved your bathroom. Can’t wait.
