One Room Challenge Week 4: DIY Nightstands

Hi there! Welcome back to the ORC! If you’re here from Calling it Home, welcome! If you’re not, be sure to check out the amazing designers and participants that are taking on the challenge- making over a room in just 6 short weeks, and sharing updates along the way!

We chose to take on our guest bedroom after completing our guest bathroom in last falls challenge. So far we’ve shared the plans, our paint solution, and our wood headboard accent wall. Today, as promised, we’re sharing a sneak peek of our DIY nightstands!

The inspiration for them came from these old turned legs that I found at a vintage boutique while vacationing up north Michigan last summer. They were a steal at 4 for $10, so I snatched up 8 of them knowing that I’d find a perfect spot eventually : )

Eventually turned out to be as the nightstands for this room, and they were easier to put together than you’d think!

A few pieces of 1x4s and 1x2s, legs and a solid top is all it took to build these fun little tables. Because they are such a simple design, I chose a two toned pattern of wood and white tones to jazz them up a bit.

I’m loving how they look in the space and how the wood ties in with the headboard wall!

So far we’ve spent $36 of our $300 budget on the wood headboard, and this project added about $22 since we already owned the legs and used scrap pieces of 1x2s. $58 down, $242 left to play with!

A couple of fun lamps and accessories have already made their way onto them as you can see as well, but I’ll wait to share all of the details on reveal day : ) A little teaser never hurt anyone, right? We’ve also added a little Restoration Hardware inspired art that came in at a total of $22, and you’ll never guess where they’re from! Plus, next week, if all goes well, the bench and the seat will get some blog love!

Last but not least, let’s take a gander at the ol’ to-do list, shall we?

  • Paint
  • Bedding
  • Window treatments
  • Wood accent wall behind bed
  • Build 2 nightstands
  • Build a bench
  • Add seating
  • New light fixture
  • Add area rug
  • Add lamps
  • DIY bedskirt
  • Artwork

We have so much left to do, but I’m hopeful that we can get it done! We’ve already found the chair just screaming for a makeover, dragged in an unused area rug, and have half of the artwork figured out. That just leaves about 50 other things to finish up in about a week… ready, set, go! Well, maybe after a quick cup of coffee… : )

Pst… I’ll be sharing the full plans and instructions for the nightstands after the challenge is over, so I hope you stick around to find out more!

My parents in Northern Michigan have the same exact spindles in their house! Love how you turned them into nightstands! Great job! 🙂
