It’s officially here! After the last few weeks of craziness and late nights, the Fall 2016 One Room Challenge is officially over.
This season we decided to take on our office, which is actually our 4th bedroom. It’s amazing because we have tons of closet space for storage, but we had been treating it like was square footage that didn’t exist (you know, that room where the door is basically permanently closed so no one can see the cray) and stuff was ev.er.y.wh.ere. Here’s a few of the before’s to start off the party.
When we moved in the space was dark and dated with orange-brown-red-tan-who knows what it was originally carpet, that we luckily replaced shortly after getting the keys.
We then slapped some paint on the walls, put a mix of old furniture pieces in the space, and a whole heck of a lot of paperwork, project remnants, sewing projects gone wrong, gifts I forgot I had purchased for people, and you get the picture 🙂
After clearing everything out, we came up with a design plan that we thought would be the most user friendly for us which included a larger work surface and more room for storage. We threw in some color for a little bit of a challenge (I’m a total neutral nut) and used this plan as our inspiration throughout the weeks!
And drum roll please…. here’s how we brought the plan to life!
We’re so happy with how everything turned out and how bright and fun the space is now! I can’t wait to start posting more projects now that I can actually find my supplies, and use this forgotten space in our house more often 🙂
Thanks so much to Linda at Calling it Home for hosting another amazing event! We look forward to keeping our participation streak strong and will see you next spring to take on another space! I’m already itching to tackle more… but maybe after a little nap 🙂

Thank you Cassie! They’re one of my favorite parts about the room 🙂
Wow, that built-in totally makes the room! I love how you framed the magazine features too. It’s such a personal touch. Another successful ORC!
Thanks Melissa 🙂 I had blank frames and it worked out perfect as a little fun reminder of past projects!
Oh! Wow! It turned out SO well!! Great job – that shelving is to die for!!
Thank you Krista! That means so much to us!

Thanks so much Lisa! We’re so excited with how it turned out 🙂
Hi! I know this is an old post but this is gorgeous- do you have any instructions for how you created this shelving? I want to recreate this entire room
Yes, yes, yes! All the heart eyes!!! I’m seriously swooning! I love all the galvanized elements. And that built-in! I love it! Congrats on an amazing reveal!!
You are too sweet! Thanks so much Jen!
Where did you get the fabulous desk/table? Love the room!
Thanks so much Linda! We built the table using a farmhouse style top and 4×4 legs 🙂
Can you provide the table dimensions? It is beautiful
Hi Amy! We made it roughly 4′ wide, 7.5′ long and standard 30″ tall to fit our particular dining room 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by!
Hi, I absolutely love how your room came out!! Fantastic job!! My question is, where did you get the galvanized funnels from? I’m confused if there from Target or just the chairs are? I’m sorry if I be asked and you already supplied the information regarding them, I checked twice just to make sure before I asked ya Thanks again! I love love those shelves with the ship lap! You have great taste!! God Bless!
Thanks Nina-Marie! The funnels are from Homegoods and were in the outdoor section 🙂 Thanks so much for the sweet comment!
Your shelves look great! SO much storage! It looks fantastic!
Thanks so much Emy! 🙂
This office is ah-mazing!!! Your ORCs always impress me. I love the use of the table centered in the room. Pinning that idea 🙂 It truly looks gorgeous! Beautiful job, as always.
Thanks so much Erin! We really appreciate the pin 🙂
This turned out so beautiful, definitely an room to inspire creativity! I love all the metal accents, especially those funnel plant holders. Great job!
Where are the curtains from
Hi Mandy! The curtains were made using fabric from Joann Fabrics 🙂
Love your room! Can you tell me where you found the rug?
Thanks so much Julie! The rug is from Rugs USA online 🙂
I love this space. The built ins are awesome and those chairs are so upbeat! I’m inspired 🙂
Thanks so much Gabby! 🙂
Where is the hanging light from?
Hi Stacy! It’s from Nebraska Furniture Mart 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
Gorgeous room!!! Can you give any pointers/info about building the wood wall/shelves? I’m seriously drooling and have already told my hubby he’s helping me make this happen in our home! 🙂
Hi Amy! Thanks so much! My only pointer would be to cut each piece as you go – it takes a little bit more time but you can account for any funny angles in the walls and make everything fit perfectly! Good luck on your project! I’m sure it will be amazing!
Love the paint color in the office. Can you share the color name or is it a custom mix? Thanks!
Hi Marci! Thanks so much! It’s Stonington Gray 🙂
Hello! This room is fantastic and my husband and I have chosen this to be our inspiration for our office/library. Did you use plywood for the shiplap wall? How did you get it to look so rustic? Which stain color was used? Thank you!
Saw this room in recent issue of This Old House Magazine. Love the shelves. Can you share the construction? Share plans?
Hi Dave! Thanks so much for visiting our site! We have not shared exact plans for the shelves, but here’s a stab at explaining them if this helps 🙂 We braced the shelves every 22″ with 1×2’s on the side and back walls, drilled into studs. The bottom base was built using 1x4s, making a box shape with a few supports in the center. The shelves are made of 1x12s that sit on top of the 1×2 supports. Last we put on the face frame! The face frame is made up of 1x4s for the vertical pieces, and 1x2s along each shelf. We added some additional support to the shelves by adding pocket holes on the bottom of the 1×12 shelves where they hit the 1×4 face frames. If you wanted to put extremely heavy things on the shelves, I’d recommend adding some more supports throughout, but for what we were using it for this did the trick! Happy to exchange an email if that would help with more step by step instructions if you’d like! Thanks again! sypsiedesigns@gmail.com
Thanks. I sent you an email.
What are the dimensions? Height and width?
I love that desk and am wanting to make one for my daughter’s new big girl room.
I would love to know more like stain used / type of wood used / actual sizes used.
looks like 2by’s on top and maybe 2 x 4 as a stringer going from 4×4 to 4×4? I’m just
guessing though. Also, this doesn’t look like cheap wood, did it cost a lot. Loved seeing
this makeover in This Old House, i came right over to your site. Great job and so inspiring!
Thanks so much Michelle! So happy you found us in TOH! We used standard boards from Home Depot and stained them with two colors – Mixwax’s Early American and then Classic Gray. The top is made from 2x10s and 2x4s, the legs from 4x4s, and the skirting is a 1×4. The project all in was less than $75 🙂 Hope that helps!
What a beautiful transformation! Did you use wallpaper behind the shelves, or is that wood that you stained?
Thanks Nora! We used a thin sheet of wood called underlayment that we cut into strips and stained. It was a very easy and cost effective way to shiplap 🙂
What is the color of the stain you used on the underlayment used for shiplap?
And what is the color of the rug from RugsUSA?
Absolutely gorgeous remodel. Excellent job. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hi Tracy! I believe the color here was special walnut and the color of the rug was blue gray 🙂 Thanks so much for the sweet note!
How did you do the front 1x2s? Did you cut each piece out after the vertical 1x4s were in?
Hi Sara! Yes, the 1×4’s go the full height of the shelving unit and the 1×2’s were cut to fit in between 🙂
