One Room Challenge Week 4 – Tile & Ceiling Updates

After last week’s sickness and work conundrum (I had to google how to spell that one!) I’m excited to report that we’re back in action with this One Room Challenge!

This past week we spent hanging the stained wood boards on the ceiling, and laying the fun patterned tile. Both shockingly as simple as we thought! A nice little break after playing catch up from last week.

We knew we wanted to use the same special stain mixture from the countertops in week 2 for the ceiling, and picked up 12 shiplap boards from Home Depot. This is the first time we’ve used the product, and as long as you pick through the pile for good pieces we’d definitely recommend it!

First off we marked where the joists were behind the drywall, and started cutting the wood piece by piece to fit. In order to give it a little extra strength, we used glue on each piece, and angled the nails to prevent any falling boards.

We didn’t know if we’d need a border or trim around the edges, but I think we’re going to leave it as is for now! It’s a little rustic, but turned out much cleaner than we thought it would be. Our last house had so many walls that were far from straight from settling over the years, that we’re just used to having to cover the gaps. No complaints here with this room!

Next up were the floors. We chose these tiles and got into a little groove. As always, M cut, while I laid the tiles. After a couple of hours, we had a completely new floor to pet stare at.

Here’s a very unfinished, but little sneak peek at how everything is working together so far! It’s so different than our last house, and has been fun to pull in a few more daring touches, trendy or not!

Next up, grout, trim, picking a paint color (somehow the hardest part of this so far, I can’t make up my mind!), hanging the artwork, and adding some accessories! T minus 2 weeks until the reveal 🙂 See you back here next week for the final details!

Before you go, be sure to check out the amazing designers and guest participants that are following along with the One Room Challenge, hosted by Linda at Calling it Home!

LOVE that tile! I’ve been looking at something similar for my brother’s kitchen that I’m helping him design. Can’t wait to see this all finished!

Just found this blog! I love the flooring and ceiling! You two did a great job! What stain did you use on the wood? It’s pretty. We plan on planking our home office soon.

Hi Crystal! We did! When comparing floor levels and looking at the threshold, we had a little wiggle room and were able to use the existing tile as our subfloor/cement board.
