Week one we shared the before and design plan, week two we got down to a clean blank slate, and week three of this One Room Challenge is all about those floors!
The room originally had the same linoleum floors as the kitchen, and it was showing tons and tons of wear.
Pretty, right? When deciding on the floors, we looked at all sorts of options initially. We ruled out the hardwood that’s running in all of the other rooms on this floor for obvious reasons, ruled out keeping this lovely linoleum, and eventually ruled out tile, as one day we’d love to expand this room into the garage a bit and make it more functional. So, for now we decided to look at more water safe options like laminate. After a few trips to the store and crunching some numbers, we ended up with a product we’ve never used before, Pergo!
We decided it was a great “short” term solution, was cost friendly for the space, and was easy enough to install ourselves. Sold π
We chose a gray wash color so that it didn’t compete with our new hardwoods, broke out some tools, and got to work!
The hardest part by far was all of the intricate cuts around the cabinet and closet, but the jigsaw was worth it’s weight in gold to get the job done.
We floated the floors on top of the laminate for a few reasons – A. the laminate is no joke to get up. We’re convinced the glue that was used could withstand a wrecking ball. You’re welcome for getting Miley Cyrus stuck in your head now π B. We wanted the transition from wood to Pergo to be as even as possible, and if we took the laminate out it would have been slightly lower.
Now that they’re all done, we’re super happy with our decision! One day we’ll have some lovely tile in here and a much bigger space, but for now this is perfect. It’s pretty indestructible and if someone comes in the house with wet boots there’s no panicking on my end, which is perfect for a mudroom/laundry room!
The rug from our design board was also delivered, and I couldn’t wait to get the floors down to see how they look together!
It’s just the right pop of color for what we’re going for π
And that’s a wrap for this week! Next week I’m hoping to share our plans for that longer blank wall, and hopefully get some shopping done, you know, for all of the accessories you need in a laundry room. At least that’s what I’m telling my husband π
Be sure to check out all of the amazingness this week from both the designers and participants over on the ORC site!
I love the color of the floors you chose! And great choice on the Pergo! My in-laws have it in their kitchen and it’s been there for years and still looks fantastic!
Yes The Floor is Gorgeous! Canβt wait to see the finished project!
Can you describe the colors in the rug? I took a gamble and ordered it but it’s backordered for a couple weeks and now I’m getting worried it’s the wrong colors!!
Thanks!
Hi Sally! Absolutely! The colors are true to the photo, however it does look much whiter and lighter in person, especially at certain angles. There’s a sage green with hints of dark pink, blue and orange. Hope that helps!
