Have you ever purchased something completely unnecessary at the time and gotten “the look” from your guy? If you’re like me then you might be thinking that’s a dumb question 🙂
I get that look more often than I’d like to admit, but this one was extra special.
I even text a friend trying to validate my purchase before I told M, and even she laughed at me.
You know those Facebook sell groups, similar to the marketplace? Well, they’re dangerous 🙂 Dangerous enough to get you to buy an old china hutch from 30 mins away just a few weeks before you’re selling your home, and movers are packing up your things you’re hoping you’ll see soon (we hadn’t found our new house yet).

But guys, it was $25! And green and old and spider-web-filled, but I loved the size and needed storage in a big way in my office. I convinced myself that because it wasn’t huge, it would fit in any new office space we found, and that was enough to bring it on home.
I loved the original pulls that were on the piece so just cleaned those up a bit with Barkeepers Friend (AMAZING at cleaning up old hardware), did a quick sand on the whole piece and put a few coats of chalk paint on the outside. Unfortunately the original wood was painted over with a very odd green/black paint treatment that was chipping off, and because of my tight time schedule (aka moving), I chose to just give it a clean coat of new paint to bring it back to life!

Instead of also painting the inside, I decided to keep the original wood exposed to make it pop against the bright white, and gave the whole hutch a coat of poly.
The original hinges from the door were still attached, and I’m still debating between rebuilding a door or not, but for now the open storage is perfect!

It ended up in the office for some much needed storage and was a fun pop against the dark and moody walls. My marriage also ended up unharmed and M actually ended up liking it in the end 😛

What do you think? Should I add a door with glass or a mirror to restore the hutch, or leave it open as is? I think I’d love it both ways! The full office reveal will be on the blog early next week, (Update: Office Reveal is here!) so be sure to follow along to see how it all plays together!
