We’re halfway through the One Room Challenge now but this week we’ve got a lot to show for it! I’ve actually kept the big secret this week from Instagram so it’s a surprise over here (okay it’s just the paint color, but big secret sounded more exciting) today! And as always with the ORC, there’s a story that goes along with it, and a few trips to the paint store. Insert head smack emoji here.
Last week, we shared about the wallpaper being completed, and this week is all about the trim work and painting! For the trim, we chose a simple board and batten pattern and ran it about 6′ tall on every wall. The baseboards we replaced with 1×5, the top rail, window and door trim with 1×4’s and the vertical battens with 1x3s. We then added a 1×2 to the top rail, and after lotsssss of patching, sanding and caulking, it was time to paint!

Ohhhhh paint. I normally can pick a paint color our very confidently and know exactly what I’m looking for going into a project. This time… I didn’t. I knew I wanted a greige that leaned more tan than gray, and something in between light/medium (lidium?) that would compliment the undertones in the wallpaper.
I brought home roughly 5,203,418 paper swatches, and narrowed it down to five. Then, after getting to the store to pick up said five samples, completely changed my mind and got five different samples. Found one that I loved, but felt slightly disappointed that it was such a popular color, but decided to go with it anyways. The color? Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams. Second from the right. But, the story doesn’t end there.

I went to SW to get the gallon of paint to get the project going, got a coat up on one wall (and it’s of course not an easy paint job with all the trim!) anddddd it was not even close to the sample. It was pink! What. The. Heck.

So, I ended up back at the store where they were stunned on what happened. They ended up color matching the sample I had picked up instead, and because I was feeling risky already, had them add an extra 50% of tint, so that it was somewhere in between Agreeable Gray and Anew Gray. See the difference? Left is before, and right is after. So much better!

The result? Totally worth all of the headache! I don’t think I’ve ever hemmed and hawed over a paint color choice like this before, but I am SO happy with how it turned out! Now that all of the wallpaper, trim and painting is done, it’s time to get to the decorating part! Next week I’m aiming to get the light up, the main furniture pieces in, and hopefully do a little shopping 🙂

As always, find so much more amazing inspiration over on the One Room Challenge site!
